Moving to Mara

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: May 15 2007 | By: admin

For the last two weeks, I have been travelling back and forth between Nairobi and Mara. I finally managed to move all my things from Nairobi and stationed permanently in Mara, but experiencing difficulty establishing my internet connection and method to charge my laptop. I will be in Nairobi this week so I will update my blog there. Sorry for not updating my blog.

Asuka - Great to hear from you! Hope you will succeed in getting your computer up and running in the Mara shortly as I look forward to reading your blogs.

Hello. After e-mailing a few people, it has been suggested that you may be able to help me with regards to seeking work experience. I am looking to work with a vet in Africa, preferably Kenya, in preparation to my veterinary university course, commencing in September 2008 in the UK.
This has been a harder task that I first thought, and I was wondering if you ever took work experience students, or know of a vet that did?
Thank you for your time
Kind regards
Gemma

Dana-

I am in Nairobi right now and busy updating my blog. Unfortunately I am still trying to sort out my internet problem and way to charge my laptop, but it should be sorted out soon!

Gemma-

Hi, thank you for the inquiry. When you are referring to work experience, I am assuming that you are looking for paid position? If so, it would be very difficult to find that in Kenya. Vets here will take volunteer and one will be responsible for their own accommodation, food, visa, etc. As my vehicle do not have enough space for both my assistant and student, currently I am not capable to take any volunteer student for my project.

I understand the problems of foreiners taking possitions of paid work, so would be looking for unpaid work. Its realy just looking for some time shadowing a vet to confirm my wish to concentrate on african ecology whan i am doing my degree.
i would be most greatfull if you could give me the details of any vets you know that would take that sort of student (or when you have a free moment pass my details to them), or if you could suggest an organisation i could ask?
Thank you
Gemmma
