Additional Problems

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: Oct 29 2007 | By: admin

Mara Conservancy Mechanic found out that some parts of the differential gear were cracked… After working on my car for two days, he is heading to Nairobi to buy spares for all the broken car parts. It is now 4th week without a car for me.

‘differential gear ‘= sets of gears allowing vehicle’s driven wheels to revolve at different speeds when going around corners

Further stripping of parts from the hind wheels.

Once again, corrugation of Mara road causes metal part to chip off.

Mechanic gathers all the parts he is bringing to Nairobi as samples.

Water Shortage

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: Oct 27 2007 | By: admin

We are desperately waiting for November rain. We depend on rain harvesting for our water supply and now all my tanks are empty. Last week, my workders started fetching water from nearby chemichemi (swamp).

The depth was only 20cm deep!(check out the stick my worker is holding) Umm, the water is very milky… definitely not suited for drinking purpose.

Who Welded the Suzuki?

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: Oct 26 2007 | By: admin

After commuting to Kichwa garage for three consecutive days, my moribund Suzuki is still giving me headache. Ok, I want to know who welded the screw for the transformer gearbox!! (we cant open it!) It must be mechanic from Nairobi garage, but they are all denying. Well, it is definitely not me because I don’t have a hobby of welding car parts on Sunday afternoon… Some people are suggesting me to go back to Nairobi to do complete repair of chasis, others are suggesting me to remove the gearbox and send it to Nairobi for fixing. I don’t know what to do! Tomorrow another mechanic from Mara Conservancy is coming to check on my vehicle…

mycar19.jpg
The oiled black part is where the chasis was cracked (it goes all the way to the other wheel).

Price of Second Hand Vehicle

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: Oct 23 2007 | By: admin

Answer to Robin’s comment-

Toyota Landcruiser is the car of choice in the Mara (other one is Landrover, but much more expensive). According to my friend who deals with second hand vehicle, the price for the second hand Landcruiser is somewhere around 1,000,000ksh (USD 15,400). If you are lucky, you can get 94-95 model for this price. Those cars below this price range might end up with high repair and maintenance cost after the purchase, he says.

Repair Continues

Category: Life of a Vet | Date: Oct 23 2007 | By: admin

Today my car spent an entire day in garage, but the work was not finished and I was told to bring back the car tomorrow. The crack on the chasis behind left front wheel now extended all the way to the one behind the right front wheel (so one big crack runs from one wheel to another). Then this caused the wheel axis to bend backwards, pushing the tire into rim. Well, I am no machanic so it is difficult for me to properly explain the extent of the car damage. Only thing I know is that I probably have to sell off the car due to the extent of this damage…

Why is everything falling apart?!

Kamau, daktali ya gari (car doctor), operates on the gear box.

brokencar3.jpg
I don’t know the name of this parts, but it was severely dented from hitting rocks. The crack on the chasis ran behind this parts from left wheel to right wheel…
