Back to Kenya

After six weeks in Tanzania, I have returned to Kenya where increasing number of people are being hacked, burned and displaced out of their own homes by angry mob of people. I was difficult for me to immediately sit down and write about the current state of this country as I was bombarded with more and more depressing news during my stay in Nairobi. What is going on in Kenya? Where did all these hatred and anger come from…? Even here in Trans Mara district, Maasai are fighting with Kalenjin in certain parts of the district. In the small center near my house, Maasai youth are chasing away Kisii businessman claiming that ‘they are becoming rich from Maasai’. STOP IT! Can’t people see that they are destroying themselves by all these hatred and anger?!
Now no tourist comes to the Mara and operational fund for conservation work is virtually dried up. Rangers are being told to go back to their rural home untill peace and tourist revenue returns in Kenya. My vaccination work is difficult to continue as my work area covers both Maasai land and Kalenjin land…

Asuka, I have been thinking about you and wondering how you are doing. I am so sad to hear about all the horrible news coming from Kenya. At this point, it seems that all one can do is hope that people come to their senses and stop this crazyness. Will this situation change your plans at all? Lisa

I haven’t had time to read a lot but I intend to read up on what is happening there over the weekend and I do know it is one big tragedy in Kenya but I am very happy to hear you are OK!

I have been thinking about you also Asuka. My heart is breaking with all the news that is coming out of Kenya and my beloved Mara. Trying to raise the funds for your vaccination program and for the continued patroling of the Mara for the protection of the animals is proving so very difficult at this time. We need the funds to be raised-I have posted on a well-known travel site on the Internet about the situation concerning funding for the Mara Conservancy and really have received hardly any responses. People profess their love the Mara, but aren’t donating any dollars to the cause. What does the future hold for the Mara and it’s wildlife if poaching becomes rappant? I hate to even think about it. I’ll be coming back this September no matter what!!!! Please accept my donation to add to your vehicle fund.

Thanks everyone for all the concern. I hope peace will return to Kenya soon.
Dana-thank you for your donation. Mara has financially collapsed after all the tourist disappeared. Many lodges closed down, even more lodges sent their staff home on unpaid leave till tourists return and funds for wildlife reserve protection is gone. I will update more detailed effect on Mara on new entry. It is very bad.
