I am on safari and just checked my email for the first time after reaching Mombasa. It is extremely humid and hot here…something I am not so used to.

I just noticed that wildlifedirect has started a “Stop Wildlife Poisoning” blog and video I took was on there. It is footage of paralyzed lion (Day 2). This lion was completely paralyzed from Day2 to Day10. It was then killed by passerby lion on Day10.

Asuka sorry the weather is so uncomfortable. I’m hoping you enjoy your break. Haven’t been able to watch this video yet, just too painful for me, as I know these heart wrenching images will stay with me.

Hey you guys! I left the coast and now spending some time with Lion Guardian and lion researchers. I am learning lots of things and hopefully we can apply some conservation concept back home in Mara! I am visiting Laikipia for another lion project, then heading back home.

Hi Asuka,
Sorry for the very dramatic headline to our blog! Hope you don’t mind us using our little breakdown as blog fodder, and that journey was good after the initial hiccup!

Hi Azuka
I have a question for you about canine distemper in lions..
I read this national geographic article and posted about it. .is there any kind of vaccination possible for lions?

drought followed by heavy rain = favorable condition for tick to reproduce
lots of ticks = higher chance of getting tick-borne parasitic disease like Babesia
tick-borne disease = lowering of immunity
lowering of immunity = more prone to viral disease
(e.g. distemper)

In East Africa, vaccinating wild animals using CDV vaccine is controvercial, so it is not done (I believe)
