Need to Pick Your Brain

Ranger from Mara Bridge, Barnabas came to me the other day to report to me that Mara stickers are not selling at the gate.
This is the sticker Barnabas is talking about. It was made by Japanese gentleman called Mr. Ogihara who wanted to sell the stickers to tourist passing throught the gate so that profit can be donated towards anti-poaching patrol fee. He sent us the stickers couple of weeks ago and I helped him make the poster for the sale which explains how Mara Conservancy’s ranger salary is paid through donation due to lack of fund and that we are in dire need of anti-poaching patrol fee through this sticker sale.
It is sold at Ksh1,000 ($15) and entire amount is directed towards the patrol fee. We thought it would be a good idea for tourist to bring back something memorable in return for their support. Rangers were quite excited and they said they were going to try their best to let tourist know about the situation they are in right now and that by buying this sticker he/she will be supporting the anti-poaching operation.

Well, two weeks have now passed and rangers failed to sell even one…. Barnabas was in self pitty mood, telling me that they did explain about their need to raise the patrol fund through sticker sale, but the reply he got from tourists was “I am only willing to pay $2 for it”. And this reply seems to killed Barnabas’ enthusiasm in trying to raise patrol fund for his fellow rangers… Ok, I am trying my best trying to help with the Mara crisis which is lingering much longer than we have ever expected, but I am running out of idea for the fund raising! If there is any professional fundraiser somewhere out there, please give us an idea!

Honestly, I think $15 for a bumper sticker is really expensive, especially for people who are on vacation and may have limited funds. You might sell more of them for $5, which means you’ll have to sell A LOT of them to reach your goal.

I have to admit I would agree with Sheryl. Whilst I am happy to pay $15 (and I will buy one when I am there Sept 16th!) I think if the cost was reduced sales would undoubtably follow. However, I do not know profit margins etc so not sure whether $5 is feasible…Are they being sold in the lodges nearby?…Serena, Kichwa etc. I will get my thinking cap on with regard to other ideas!

I think it costed the person $5 to make it.

Hmm … that’s an expensive sticker all around. Can you try selling two of them for $15?

What about changing the wording? Instead of the “we’re selling stickers” approach, you said something like “donate at least [dollar amount] to conserving the Mara and receive a sticker”. That way, what you’re ’selling’ is the conservation of the Mara, and hey, you also get this cool sticker! It might somehow have more appeal that way.
Good luck with this, and please let us know how it turns out.
Best regards,
Sylvia

lower the cost might help since 15 for each is expensive. and is there any way the maker can lower the cost of making it? or have someone donate the materials?

The stickers are not sold at the lodges, I dont think they will agree to sell them. This is what the poster says. Maybe I should change the wording to what Sylvia suggested.
Your Sticker Purchase Will Support Our Anti-poaching Patrols!
Post-election violence in Kenya resulted in a 80%
decline in tourism from the beginning of January to the present day. Our work is now threatened as a direct result of the collapse of tourism. Currently most of our ranger’s salaries and anti-poaching patrols are funded by donation and this will continue until tourism returns.
Help us protect the precious wildlife in Mara
by supporting our anti-poaching patrols!

I say, “Ask why?” … engage the tourists in conversation and ask them why the will not buy/donate (the suits call this a market survey) … you might visit a camp/lodge and engage in a discussion about the stickers (the suits call this a focus group) … based on this feedback, revise your signage and approach to appeal to the tourists … the tourists may be tired of people with their hands outstretched so it must be done with pride intact (can’t be viewed as begging)… perhaps include some small but unique souvenir … hope this helps … :-}

Nice Idea Asuka but I think the sticker doesn’t say “I’ve been to the Mara” its message must make me want to put it on my car - something like “I’m a friend of the Mara”. I cant believe it costs 5$ to make - in Nairobi such stickers cost between 1 and 2 dollars to buy. I’d go with trying to get a donation and in return you get a free sticker. It would be amazing if you could link this to the Mara triangle blog and have the message - “visit the Mara everyday on our blog” …. and have the URL on the sticker….also that logo is a sable antelope (?) which doesn’t occur in the Mara - what about using the big cats - they are so much more attractive and Mara is renown for them.

The only other thing I can think of is to make a special track with very unique views and charge a premium to go to this unique place … you are asking tourists who DO show up to pay a penality for those who DID NOT show up … you have to think like a tourist, not a conservationist, and understand their wants, needs and desires and figure out what incentive you need to offer to get them to cooperate … perhaps consult a used car salesman!

Thanks everyone for your input. The sticker is not made by me so let me pass on all your comment to the guy in Japan.

The price is way too high. I suggest we put a box at the gate and accept a donation size of their choice for the sticker. Some guests won’t give much, others may give more, but it should balance out to a fair price overall. The stickers themselves were also a donation to us so we shouldn’t worry too much about the mark up price or the cost of making. It’s great publicity for us anyway if they start appearing on cars around Kenya as the website address is there on the actual stickers.

Paula, it’s a roan antelope and is the logo for the Mara Conservancy. It is no longer in the area due to mass poaching in the past, but we hope one day to introduce it back into the Mara.

Paula and William have more experience, so they probably know best … thank you for listening … I didn’t mean to be critical, just to help anyway I could … :-}

Thanks everyone for the input! We will make the necessary changes so these stickers will help us in some way.

I had one other idea a lot of charities use … you could create an “Honor Roll” on the Mara Triangle blog page and list who buys a sticker for all the world to see … if they pay $15 or more, they are listed as a Gold contributor, $10-$14 a Silver and $5-$9 a Bronze and less than $5, honorable mention … the blog programmers would have to say if you can do such a thing … and you’d have to spell their names correctly … just an idea.
Patrick, on 28 Jun 2008
Can you sell them through the blog? I would purchase one.
Robin Andreae, on 08 Jul 2008
Sorry about posting so late. I’m kind of playing catch-up.
I like the idea of saying that the sticker is a bonus or gift for your doantion of $15.00 or more. Maybe you should put in future plans, like the roan antelope reintroduction and immediate goals. I know that from past fund raisers, people respond better to positives and knowing what their contribution will help acomplish.
Also a lesson learned from my GreenPeace days find a cute animal poster child (harp seals). It works wonders. maybe some photos of roan antelopes would work?
Just some thoughts. Good Luck with your sales.

Hi Asuka, as an old Fundraiser, I think the ideas that have been presented are great. If nothing else leave out the words (buy, purchase etc). Dana and I are going to hopefully have Joseph do a talk at Kichwa, if all goes well, I will also ask if I can do a little fundraising after the talk I am really good at that so keep your fingers crossed my be able to sell a few.
asuka, on 15 Jul 2008
Thanks Jo Anne! I look forward to seeing you two in Sept!
Mel, on 25 Jul 2008
I think it’s all in the language used. The bumper sticker is not actually for sale for $15.00. However, there is a $15.00 donation to preserve the Mara and the bumper sticker is a free token of thanks.
William, on 30 Sep 2008
Just to let everyone know - we sold out on the stickers! Soon after this post they started to sell really well, which took us all by surprise.
