Mara Conservancy states:

Through effective and efficient management methods, conservation of the Trans Mara will demonstrate the economic values of wildlife conservation, combined with sharing benefits with a wide range of legitimate interests. It is important for the long-term security of the reserve that local Maasai communities adjoining the Mara Triangle benefit from the reserve or they will ultimately reclaim the land for livestock. The reserve can provide financial compensation and contribute 19% of revenue to the local people, but there is a need to do more. Maasai are one of the most marginalized people in Kenya with poor access to health service, veterinary service and education to this date. Livestock are still the backbone of Maasai society and livestock ill health directly affects the livelihood of the people. The provision of veterinary service is something that is probably more important than any other intervention to assist the local Maasai.
